C is for Catherine (#AtoZChallenge)

C is for Catherine (#AtoZ Challenge)
C is for Catherine - 38 of them in my family file! Fourteen of them only as Catherine, four as Catherine Elizabeth, three as Catherine Ann and two as Catherine Margaret. Two of these ladies were known as Kate and one as Cassie. The first Catherine in my tree is Catherine McLaren, my 4th great grandmother, born 1786 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland and the latest, Catherine Patterson, born in 1954 in Queensland, a 3rd cousin once removed. So you see quite a timespan.

Catherine is often shortened to the following nicknames: Katrin, Cathy, Cate, Cat, Cati, Catie, Kitty, Cath, Cather, Wren, Erin, and others (Wikipedia).

Do you have a Catherine and what was her nickname?

  1. I love your A-Z subject idea. I am tempted to try it, but at a later date.

And YES I have many Catherines, Katherines, Katharines, Kathryns and Cathryns (and that's from memory.

  2. This is a fun theme for the A to Z Challenge. We have two Catherine's in our family. My husband's grandmother went by Kitty and my daughter is Kate.

  3. We have two (although they were both with a K), and both of them went by Kitty.

Good luck with the 2015 A to Z Challenge!

  4. My maternal grandmother's name was Helen Kate according to her birth certificate and then Katherine Helen according to her marriage certificate. Everyone called her Kit.

  5. My gr-gr-gr-grandmother Kitty MATTHEW nee ASHTON (in Yorkshire) is 'Kitty' in all but one of the records I've found for her. The exception is a parish register entry re banns of marriage, which says 'Cathne'. I am still searching for her baptism!
