D is for Daniel (#AtoZChallenge)

D is for Daniel  (#AtoZChallenge)
Daniel, what springs to mind? Daniel and the lion's den? This biblical story is in the sixth chapter of the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. I have a copy of the Book of Daniel given to my grandfather from his mother on his fifth birthday in 1904. It's a well-worn book so he must have read it many times.

What about other Daniel's? There are twelve men named Daniel in my family file. The earliest being Daniel Donovan, my 5th great grandfather, born on the 6th September 1735 in St Phillip, Barbados, and the latest being Daniel Dylan Baker, born in  2009 in Camperdown, New South Wales, my third cousin three times removed.

Daniel is a masculine given name and a surname of Hebrew origin. It means, "God is my judge", and derives from two early biblical figures, primary among them Daniel from the Book of Daniel. It is a common given name for males and is also a surname. (Wikipedia)

Do you have a story about Daniel?

  1. I like the name Daniel, but I don't have any family members with hat name as far as I know. I do have a friend with the surname of Daniels.

  2. My daughter's partner's name is Daniel. I remember my friend and I used to love that Elton John song about Daniel. She named her first son Daniel I'm sure because of it....

  4. In some handwriting it is virtually impossible to distinguish between 'Daniel' and 'David', so these names are often indexed incorrectly. It's worth keeping that in mind if you can't find a Daniel or a David when you do index searches.
